06.25.2023 - olympic national park

a hike in a rain forest at lake quinault.  a magical, mystical experience.
dinner is at a local bar & grill in forks.  suzi gets sent back to the car to fetch her i.d.  then car camping in the national forest at mora campground, just a mile and a half from the pacific coast. 

and a late evening walk on rialto beach where the drift wood comes in the size of large tree trunks and the beach is small, water smoothed stones.  it's difficult to walk on and one really needs to be aware of the tides.  there's a steep wooded hillside that comes down about a hundred yards from the shore and there are warnings about where to go when the tide starts coming in.  suzi returned in the morning to walk down to 'hole in the wall'.

we left the hotel in ritzville early, as usual.  we did have a decent hotel breakfast first. and good that we did, it was a couple of hours later that we rolled into sprague, another interstate exit.  we had opted for this route, slightly out of our way, in order to shorten the distance between available water.  but any hopes we had of finding breakfast were quickly smashed.  the only thing open was a sparsely stocked grocery store.  dan could not get any fruit, i did get toothpaste, they said there wasn't a toilet (even for customers) i've never really understood the slogan, "make america great again."  aren't we still great?  is there really any other place more developed or prosperous than the u.s., other than, perhaps, some of northern europe? and isn't it actually unamerican to imply we aren't the greatest, the best? love it or leave it, right. it was here in sprague that it made sense. here in america's bread ba...

07.03.2023 - crossing the columbia

what can i say?  this was a tough day.  it finished off any potential love affair with the great american rail to trails (gart) route. it started off well enough, up at 5:00 to the sound of garbage men across the road.  then off to find a much needed toilet.  after walking around the event center grounds, i found a community indoor swimming pool open and friendly.  a relief. we packed and were on the road by 6:30.  i think this is probably the first time i ever had anyone waiting for me to get packed.  dan is my payback for all those trips with maurice and jim. a half hour later, we pulled into the 509 cafe in kittitas.  a small hole in the wall cafe in a one block downtown, that opens at 6:00 am.  perfect.  we were the only customers, and it didn't take an hour to be served.  very nice people, he is from south philly, she from the phillipines, who appreciated the biking community coming through. the trail su...

06.26.2023, day 1 - starting the ride

it dripped rain all night. woke up to gray mist, couldn't tell if it was raining or not. as the man said, typical northwest morning.    and started packing, assembling my gear and setting it on the bike for the first time.  testing fate, i hadn't checked it back in knoxville or portland.  but everything went together well, and after a cup of tea, a banana and the remnants of a scone, i was ready. an obligatory picture, a hug and kiss, and i was off.  suzi went for a walk along the beach. the san duc and bogachiel rivers join to form the quillayute a few miles from the coast.  fed by snow melt, they vary according to season.  and, of course, you're not supposed to bring wood with you or even harvest it there, so the locals sell it.  but not to worry if you don't have cash, venmo is recognized. it's unfortunate, but the forests here are managed for lumber.  every mile or two, there's another tract...
